Government Camp, from across the Creswick
Creek(1855) Originally a town of around 25,000 people during the gold rush Creswick is now only about 1/10th of its original size ,but has retained alot of the character of gold towns of the late 1800's. |
Its wide tree lined streets and grand old public buildings create a sense of history as well as relaxation as you walk through the town that has been home to several famous people. |

In 1880 a nursery was begun to assist with reforestation of
the areas which were cleared for shoring mine drivers and fueling
boilers during the gold rush.
This was later to become the School of Forestry which
still exists and is a teaching institution for Forestry
associated with Melbourne University.
The most notable the Lindsay family.
Five of the 10 children of Dr.Robert Lindsay went on to become
leaders in the Australian artistic community-Percy,Lionel,
Norman, Ruby and Daryl became noted artists and writers
and two of Norman's novels re-create the town a century ago.
Former Prime Minister John Curtin also came from Creswick.
